If you ask 100 preparedness minded people about their thoughts on security preparedness, you are likely to get 100 different answers. However, if you reduce those answers down to their essential components, you’ll arrive at the basics of security preparedness.
The basics of security preparedness include security philosophy, personal security, and physical security. Together the basics of security preparedness provide us with the basis for a 360-security plan. It is this 360-security plan that allows us to cover all of our security needs and keep ourselves, our families and our important assets safe.
The Three Pillars of Security
As previously mentioned the three pillars of security are security philosophy, personal security, and physical security. First, security philosophy is the overarching mindset of security. Next, personal security involves how we protect ourselves. Lastly, physical security revolves around the protection of everything else, such as family, friends, property, etc. By thoroughly considering these three areas during your security planning, you will ensure that you cover all of your security basis.
Our security philosophy is our overarching method of meeting our security needs. That philosophy will dictate how we approach the security
issues that we encounter. Perhaps we will have an offensive philosophy. Maybe it will be defensive. Possible it could be a balance of the two, or an ongoing response and evaluation process.
Following our security philosophy is how we address our physical security. Our physical security boils down to a central concept. That concept is how do we protect ourselves? Without protecting ourselves well, we become vulnerable to bad actors causing us problems. When that happens, we are less likely to solve problems and keep our family and assets safe.
Physical security is the protection of assets. Assets are the things and people that are important to us as determined by our risk assessment.
Perhaps our food supply is vital to us, or some family heirlooms. Ultimately, the protection of our assets can be a critical undertaking in a disaster scenario where every life and resource proves to be precious.
The culmination of all of our security efforts should result in a 360-degree security posture. Maintaining a 360-degree security posture is a simple way of stating that through a positive security philosophy, we are protecting ourselves, our loved ones and the things that are important to us, our safety, and security.
In the end, it is by maintaining an effective 360-degree security posture that we are all able to work towards our ultimate preparedness goal. That goal is to overcome any tragic events that may occur successfully. In so doing, we will not only survive but thrive, in otherwise unfortunate circumstances.
Security Preparedness Summary
Security preparedness is an important aspect of every readiness minded person’s preparedness efforts. Without security preparedness, all of our other readiness preparations become vulnerable to people with bad intent. Therefore, when preparing for life’s difficulties, make sure you address your security philosophy, personal security, and physical security needs. You’ll be grateful that you did.
Never forget, you’re just one prep away.
